Description
Rare Red Army Unit Presentation award Belt Buckle. World War II Soviet Military award given for valor in defense of Stalingrad (Volgograd). Very rare, this was a gift when I was sent to the Soviet Union in the 1980's. The gift was explained as above with further details described as the river depicted is the bend of the Volga with the lines on the left side depicting the main section of the Hero City where nearly half a million Soviet troops died. The loss of approximately 1 million axis troops in the battle crushed Hitlers' hopes of winning the war. Soviet half tracks are depicted with a soldier who appears to be holding a propelled anti tank grenade or possibly a flamethrower? I have been told the crude workmanship is very typical of this period of Soviet manufacture. Very interesting buckle, appears to be made from cast brass and is the only one I am aware of with no information or additional examples on the internet. 3 1/8" by 2 3/4" and weighs 2.5 oz. Soviet collectors, please add any further information you have regarding this buckle. Thanks for looking!
